Business community must use established garbage disposal system
THE City Constabulary is, again, appealing to the business community not to put their garbage in the hands of ‘junkies’ or the ‘social rejects’ of society. Instead they must make use of the system for disposal established by the Mayor and City Council (M&CC), Deputy Chief Constable Trevor Merriman urged.
He told the Guyana Chronicle yesterday that rather that disposing waste properly, the ‘junkies’ would do so in any manner and at any place which, in turn, “haunts the citizens of Georgetown.”
“It is better if they dispose the refuse in a proper manner because this will save the citizens from health hazards. And we will end up spending more money on health. We’re asking store owners to wait on the trucks that go around in the afternoon to get rid of their garbage,” Merriman said.
According to him, when junkies are used by store owners, the way the refuse is disposed of causes the Council too much money, brings on health problems and results in blocked drains and canals.
Merriman said, to help ease the litter problem, the Constabulary has devised an anti-littering campaign to catch persons in the act, have them charged and placed before the court.
DIVERTED
The exercise began last October but was halted for a while because ranks were diverted to other work around elections time.
Since it resumed last month, Merriman reported, yesterday, that the exercise is now back on stream and that there will be no excuse for persons caught littering.
Some 70 cases were made last month, resulting in 40 persons paying a total of $369,000. Ten persons were placed on bonds and the others are still awaiting trials, he disclosed.
The campaign involves officers of the City Constabulary lurking around on streets to catch persons in the act of littering, Merriman said.
It was a new plan by the Constabulary to rid the city of its litterbugs and officers in plain clothes were mandated to arrest persons caught in the act.
“Littering is now a countrywide thing. Everyone knows they should not litter, so we will not be taking any excuses. Littering is something we have been fighting for a very long time. When one may want to believe that there is no Constabulary presence out there, don’t make the mistake and throw anything out there…because you will be arrested.
“Once you’re arrested and brought in here, there will be a zero tolerance and you will be taken before the court and you will have to pay a fine,” Merriman warned.
