GENERAL Manager of the Transport and Harbours Department, Marclene Merchant said that rehabilitation works will commence soon on the Vreed-en-Hoop and Stabroek, Georgetown stellings. According to the Government Information Agency (GINA), Merchant said it was the department’s intention to begin rehabilitation works over the last weekend. As such, it began mobilising materials. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, the works will now commence, most likely today.
Responding to assertions made in a Kaieteur News article yesterday, about the state of the Vreed-en-Hoop stelling, Merchant blamed speedboat operators for the rapidly deteriorating condition of the structure.
“They dock on the steps rather than alongside it…they come with speed and dock on the stairways of itself which causes the structure to be weakened over a period of time,” GINA quoted Merchant as saying.
She said too that the department will explore the possibilities of installing docking facilities with the aim of protecting the structure.
Rehabilitation to Vreed-en-Hoop and Stabroek stellings scheduled to begin this week
