– President accepts with ‘immediate effect’
POLICE Commissioner Henry Greene, who has been embroiled in allegations of rape, on Thursday issued a letter to Head of the Presidential Secretariat (HPS) Dr. Roger Luncheon, offering to retire.
His Excellency President Donald Ramotar has accepted his offer with immediate effect. Government has been under pressure to fire Greene over allegations of rape and professional misconduct. There have been strong calls by women’s groups and other civil society organisations, and also the Opposition parties, for Greene, who admitted to having consensual sex with a 34-year-old woman who accused him of raping her, to step down or be sacked.
The woman, a mother of two, had gone to Greene last November for assistance with another police matter in which she was involved. The woman came forward with her allegation in December last year.
An investigation by local and Jamaican sleuths had recommended that the Commissioner be charged but Greene moved to the court and was successful in getting a ruling blocking the charge. However, in his application for the order, he admitted to having consensual sex with the woman who was being investigated for alleged extortion.
His admission raised ethical questions and saw a number of organisations calling for him to step down or be fired. The government had also stated that it was concerned about the ethical and moral considerations of the Commissioner’s actions and a decision was pending on his future in the top cop post.
Acting Chief Justice Ian Chang had squashed the advice of Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Shalimar Ali-Hack to charge Greene.
Greene, last December, proceeded on voluntary leave, to allow an investigation into the rape allegations.
