PPP aghast at Ramjattan’s move to cut estimates for Youth, Tourism, Housing Ministries

THE People’s Progressive Party is aghast at the move by AFC Member of Parliament Khemraj Ramjattan in the National Assembly Wednesday to have the opposition controlled house significantly cut the budget estimates for the Ministries of Youth, Tourism and Industry, and Housing and Water. Such an irresponsible move by the opposition will clearly lead to the loss of hundreds of jobs both directly and indirectly in these ministries, according to a statement from the ruling People’s Progressive Party.
“It will also affect the distribution of house lots which has been fuelling one of the fastest growing sectors in Guyana, and which is responsible for creating thousands of additional jobs for working class Guyanese,” the PPP said.
The opposition’s destabilization campaign also strategically targets the vast and dynamic industries sector which has played such a significant role in the acceleration of our development through their expansion and new investments, creating thousands of jobs all across our country, the statement continued.
“The steady growth of our tourism sector, which was only a few days ago showered high praise by counterparts in the Caribbean Region as our nation became the first country to host the annual Caribbean Sustainable Tourism Development Conference on two occasions, would now amount to nothing as the opposition’s history of destruction rather than building a nation becomes ever closer to history repeating itself.
“Youths from across this country, who previously would have benefitted from the various empowerment programmes, will now be cut off from much needed opportunities.
“All Guyanese should now be on guard against this concerted effort to destroy all that we have worked hard to achieve as a nation; our steady growth in all sectors is now on the verge of being reversed in keeping with an unrelenting campaign to make our country ungovernable, this time through the use of the National Assembly.
“The PPP had warned that the country risked going back into those dark days in our history which we have worked so hard to come out of.
“However, the party wishes to place those who are bent on taking us back to those days on guard, as our unrelenting struggle and achievements as a people will not go down in vain. The PPP is prepared to fight on behalf of the Guyanese people so as to ensure we progress as a people rather than regress as a nation,” the statement concluded.
