Balance sheet of opposition not encouraging

SO much had been expected from the nation in general as to the PPP/C government and the political opposition, accepting the challenges that this unique period offered, for working together for the benefit of the nation and its peoples. The balance sheet thus far, has not been encouraging insofar as the general behaviour of the political opposition has been. There is a reality that is absent in some sections of the nation’s psyche– that the mechanism of  governance and its success or failure, though it revolves around the executive because of its mandate, also includes the opposition who, though not governing, represents the other section of the body politic.

It is a responsibility, though often talked about by some groups, at times conveniently, is often thrown through the window for often selfish reasons, not in keeping with the ultimate goal of the national good.
Again, it must be emphasised that cooperation, genuinely given, from the parliamentary opposition, is absolutely necessary at this pivotal time in the nation’s history. They must be reminded that it is Guyana that must be first in all considerations.
Thus far, the current budget debate is being conducted along adversarial lines. Such is expected, for it is the core of politics. Yet, at the end of it all, the outcome must be victory for the entire nation, and not as is desired by some, for the political opposition. They must be reminded again, that any anti-national act on their part can only result in halting the progress of national growth and development.
