Andrews’ 60 and 6-45 push Police into semi-finals
A FINE all-round performance from Leon Andrews helped Police take crucial first-innings honours from Achievers and therefore earn a place in the semi-finals of the 2011 Memorex/Leslie Amsterdam Memorial Under-17 cricket competition in Berbice. In the quarter-final, which was played at the Edinburgh Ground and which was heavily curtailed because of the unseasonal rain affecting Berbice, Police won the toss and chose to bat first.
The openers, Andrews and Shemroy McKenzie, did well to put on an opening stand of 68 between them before McKenzie was clean-bowled by off-spinner Lalchan Ramoo for 36. Andrews was joined by Kwesi Mickle and the two of them added another valuable 100 before Andrews was clean-bowled by Ramoo for 60.
With time running out, Police eventually decided to declare at 128 for 5 with off-spinner, Joseph Nicholson, picking up 3 for 20 and Ramoo 2 for 37 for Achievers.
When Achievers began their reply, opening pacer Andrews picked up two early wickets to have them struggling at 20 for 2.
Off-spinner, Kwesi Mickle, who also opened the bowling, soon after picked up one which together with Andrews having the prized wicket of former Guyana Under-15 batsman, Quesi Mentore, caught for 27, saw them slip further to 37 for 4.
Things got worse when Andrews picked up a second and a third consecutive wickets to leave them 59 for 6. After that, with Mickle scoring three more and Andrews his sixth, Achievers folded for just 73. Andrews ended with 6 for 45 and Mickle 4 for 28.
