Minister Persaud calls for more interaction in mining
GOVERNMENT is working to improve the image of the mining sector, Minister of Natural Resources and the Environment, Mr. Robert Persaud said last week.
He made the pronouncement at the introduction of the Guyana Mining Toolkit in the International Conference Centre, Liliendaal, East Coast Demnerara.
Persaud called on more companies to interact with stakeholders, particularly at the local level, since it will help to create a conducive environment to reduce any type of social issues.
He disclosed that there have been some disturbing concerns raised, with regards to what is happening in mining communities.
“I want to encourage companies and principals to be more vigilant, too, in ensuring that the necessary safeguards and controls are in place and that we do not lend the sector or lend activities within the sector to taking on any further negative connotation or image,” the minister said.
He admitted that the mining sector has image issues and gave the assurance that talks have been held with the Guyana Gold and Diamond Miners Association (GGDMA) to improve the look of mining locally.
COLLABORATION
Minister Persaud said he is hopeful that, through collaboration with companies and a number of other initiatives, the issue can be addressed.
Given the fact that mining plays a substantial part of the local economy, creating tens of thousands of jobs directly or indirectly, he appealed for it to be done in an environmentally friendly and responsible manner.
Persaud said it is necessary to look at the social dimension, health, welfare, conduct and other aspects.
He assured, as well, that mining will be taken to another level where all the people can be proud, having being given the opportunity to participate.
Additionally, the ministry is seeking to make the sector more transparent and open and create a level playing field for everyone.
Persaud debunked the notion that large mining companies are given preference above the smaller ones.
He reiterated that there is a role in the sector for all miners, regardless of their size or whether overseas or locally owned.
Minister Persaud challenged the indigenous communities to utilise the resources allocated so as to ensure equitable participation, by them, in the development of the Natural Resources Sector.
Only recently, the Amerindian Affairs Ministry received $49M in royalty from the GGMC and the Natural Resources Ministry for non-mining communities, in keeping with the 2006 Amerindian Act.
