Two charged with $2.7M theft granted $250,000 bail

PARMANAND Rampersaud, 51, of Lot 396 Caneville, East Bank Demerara and Jude Mc Lennon, 26, of Lot ‘X’ D’Urban Street, Wortmanville. Georgetown, appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton yesterday on a joint simple larceny charge. They both pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which stated that, on March 29, at Good Hope, East Coast Demerara, they stole $2.7M, belonging to Zing Wong.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, objected to bail for Rampersaud, on the ground that he has similar cases pending but he had no objection to Mc Lennon being granted, as he assisted in their investigation to arrest his co-defendant.
The prosecutor said the virtual complainant had gone to Good Hope and left the money in his vehicle, from where Rampersaud took it and carried it into Mc Lennon’s car.
The prosecutor said someone saw what transpired and gave police the car number, PMM7552, based on which Mc Lennon who was the driver was arrested and he led police to arrest  Rampersaud.
The prosecutor said Mc Lennon handed over $161,000 to the police, stating that Rampersaud paid him that sum to drive him to a location.
The magistrate asked the prosecutor to provide proof, to the court, that Rampersaud was, indeed, facing similar charges.
However, later in the day, the prosecutor changed his stance and said he was no longer objecting to pre-trial freedom for Rampersaud.
Eventually, on an application by attorney-at-law, Mr.Cecil Sullivan, both defendants were put on $250,000 bail each and the case was postponed to May 16.
