RICE farmers on Essequibo Coast have started to plough their fields in preparation for the Autumn Crop.
They are making use of the extreme hot weather to burn and plough their fields. Hundreds of acres in the South, Central and North of the Coast are already ploughed. However, some plots in Better Success, D7 and 8, Cozier and Somerset and Berks are still to be harvested.
Reports said access dams in the rice growing areas are dry and in good condition.
The Regional Administration’s bulldozer has graded and levelled the dams so farmers can transport their paddy quickly to factories after harvesting.
Government, through the Regional Administration, spends large sums every year under its capital programme to construct revetments, culverts, bridges and maintain the drainage and irrigation network so farmers can have access to water to irrigate their fields when needed.
