DEXTER Mentore (no address given) was refused bail yesterday when he appeared before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on a charge of trafficking in narcotics. He pleaded not guilty to the offence, particulars of which stated that, on March 26, at Tabatinga, he had 168 grammes of cannabis (marijuana) in his possession for the purpose.
Police Corporal Jairam Luckhai, prosecuting, said, that day, ranks on patrol observed the defendant acting in a suspicious manner and the prohibited substance was found in a plastic bag on his person.
The Prosecutor said the substance was weighed and tested in the presence of Mentore, who requested bail, stating that his wife died two months ago and he has children for whom to care.
His request was denied and he has to be at Lethem Court, also in Rupununi, on June 5.
