-investigations ongoing
The Guyana Revenue Authority, in continuing its efforts to vigorously pursue all levels of tax evaders, has announced that its Law Enforcement and Investigation Division (LEID), acting on information received, seized a quantity of alcoholic beverages that was being transported in a Bedford Truck, at Mahaica, East Coast Demerara, on March 23.
“The vehicle contained a quantity of uncustomed alcoholic beverages, valued approximately $15M, and included Ciroc Vodka, Johnny Walker (Black Label), Hennessey, Smirnoff Vodka, Heineken Beer and Tequila”.
GRA said when intercepted, the driver and porters were unable to produce any documentation to prove that the goods were legally imported and that the relevant duties and taxes were paid, in contravention of Section 218 (d) of the Customs Act, Chapter 82:01.
Five persons were subsequently detained and placed on bail and investigations are ongoing.
In a recent interview with GRA Head, Commissioner General Khurshid Sattaur, he indicated that the authority will be boosting its efforts to bring to justice professionals who continue to deliberately evade their legal obligations.
