I MAKE reference to an article published in another section of the media captioned: “Messy environs around parliament building irks Trotman.” This letter was so titled in light of the garbage buildup and the vagrancy problem that plagues the surrounding of the seat of government and the city as a whole. The Speaker was reacting to a situation whereby the environs of a parliament in which he presides is both smelly and a permanent home for a growing vagrant population.
Like so many bad things that take place in the city, no one takes the blame. The government blaming the mayor and the mayor, in turn, blaming the government.
In fact, Trotman’s disgust has a fundamental flaw, that is, it falls short of casting the accusing finger at his former comrade Hamilton Green. Trotman, in essence, was just blowing hot air, sidestepping the real source of the matter, treating the issue for what it is worth. The root cause for Georgetown’s sad state is Green. It began with him and must end there.
When Green and his party were booted out of power he found a gang pontificating his usual nonsense. Instead of meaningfully attention and directing his energies towards the uplift of the city he was more concerned with his image as a politician turn mayor. Like ‘Lucipher’, this fallen angel has lost his sting as a fearsome PNC firebrand who can only now find refuge as a mayor fitted with all the convenient axes to grind against the PPP/C.
This politician, even in his twilight years can still muster up enough courage to embarrass the government. And what a sure way to do it in the capacity of a mayor of the capital city. Typical PNC attitude (those in parliament are also guilty); be political and frustrate the government at every turn.
Green for his part is very slippery. He strikes back by using the age old rhetoric, “I am trying my best”.
O please, trying your best at what? As we speak that open sewer at Stabroek Market square flows (this sewer has been flowing for eons of time), the forest at Le Repentir grows and the garbage mounts. Georgetown gets worse and worse, it stinks to the high heavens.
I must commend the government for trying. To date there is a Homeless Centre being built at Onverwagt to take care of the vagrant groups that congregate at various points in the city. However, Green’s version of trying is a joke.
Now is not the time for idle talk, it is high time to get rid of Green. I was most relieved to see the way government has handled the GCB issue with the timely implementation of an interim council. A similar situation should be adopted when dealing with the city council or, for God’s sake, call local government elections.
