TWENTY-three-year-old Jason Lawrence of Lot 7 Broad Street Charlestown, Georgetown appeared in court yesterday before acting Chief Magistrate, Priya Sewnarine Beharry to answer to a break-and-enter and larceny charge. He pleaded not guilty to the charge, which stated that he broke and entered the dwelling house of David Grant, and stole a quantity of items totalling $729,500, on March 23 last.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said that on the day in question, the virtual complainant was in bed when he heard a noise, and upon checking, he discovered his front door open. He went outside and saw the defendant in the company of two other persons, and he gave chase behind the men, managing to apprehend Lawrence, but his other two accomplices escaped.
Some of the stolen items were found in the defendant’s home after a search was conducted, and the defendant was handed over to the police.
The prosecutor objected to bail, stating that investigations were still ongoing to locate the defendant’s accomplices and to recover the other stolen items.
But Attorney-at-law Ronald Burch-Smith represented the defendant and requested bail. He said his client was not a flight risk and the prosecutor should get specific information to object to bail. Burch-Smith said his client had two narcotics charges, which were both dismissed.
Lawrence was granted bail in the sum of $250,000, and the matter will be called again on March 28.
