On no-case submission…

‘Slant Eye’ freed of ‘Pig Man’ 2011 murder
DELROY James alias ‘Slant  Eye’, who was charged with the 2011 New Year’s Day murder  of  Sean Craig, has been freed.
Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo, sitting at New Amsterdam Court, discharged the accused after upholding a no-case submission by Defence Counsel Charrandas Persaud on Wednesday.
The charge against James was that he killed Craig , a wash bay attendant, who had gone  to the Mars Gas Station Variety Store Snackette and Beer Garden, Stanleytown, also in Berbice, to have a drink, minutes into the New Year.
The main witness for the Prosecution, Wade Mc Donald, who was with the victim, recalled that after going to the parlour, he and his friend consumed some alcoholic beverages.
He said he was about to pay for the drinks, when he heard: “Nobody move.”
McDonald said he saw a gunman, whose hat was pulled over his face, holding a gun sideways, pointing it in his direction and he took evasive action  when the weapon was fired, resulting in a bullet grazing his right side face.
The witness said, shortly after, he saw his partner with a wound to his left side chest, bleeding profusely.
McDonald said, prior to the shooting, the proprietress of the business, Joan Mars was relieved of $500,000.
James, an ex-convict was released from prison eight months before the incident, having served an eight-year sentence for robbery under arms.
Prison officials reported that James, an amateur boxer, was let out on the ground that he behaved well.
Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, who prosecuted in the murder case,  said, on January 1, 2011, Craig, called ‘Pig Man’, was a customer at the parlour and was about to pay for beverages taken, too, when he was shot.
The injured man was rushed to New Amsterdam Hospital where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
