Tough start for Guyana at Junior Davis/Fed Cup tennis

GUYANA, participating for the first time at the Junior Davis/Fed Cup found themselves grouped against some of the top seeds in the tournament and had a tough start with both the Boys and Girls team succumbing 3-0 to El Salvador in their first round robin matchup. The 2011  ITF Under-14 Girls champion Aretta Dey gave a good account of herself against her older and more seasoned opponent Paola Carprio from El Salvador in their Under-16 encounter.
The first set was closely contested as Dey stayed close with her consistent play before losing the set 6-4. The second set went 6-2 to Carprio who completed her win in a match lasting one and a half hours. Guyana’s second player Nicola Ramdyhan was not as fortunate as she was defeated easily in straight sets. The pair lost their doubles tie as well.
The Boys’ team had a hard time as well with Daniel Lopes battling for over an hour in his match against Galileo Cabrales of El Salvador before succumbing 6-2, 6-0 . His compatriot Gavin Lewis lost his singles encounter in straight sets whilst Lopes and Khalif Gobin lost their doubles match.
Guyana will be in action against Guatemala in the Boys’ category while the Girls’ team will take on Honduras. The top two teams in each group will advance after the round robin stage and the other teams will have a play-off among themselves.
The other Caribbean teams participating struggled as well with only Trinidad winning their tie when they came up against Haiti
