Prisoner gets additional three years for ganja trafficking
CONVICTED prisoner Darren Saul will have to serve an additional three years after he pleaded guilty to a charge of trafficking in narcotics at the New Amsterdam Prisons.
Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo imposed the sentence on the prisoner who confessed to having the multi-coloured bag in which the illegal plant was found within the walls of the penitentiary on February 8, last.
Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said the inmate was routinely checked by a prison officer while he was within the confines of the compound with his personal belongings.
Within the gift bag, was a transparent plastic bag in which seeds, leaves, and stems of the helm plant were discovered. The police was alerted and sleuths, on weighing the narcotic, discovered it amounted to 14 3/4 grams.
Saul, who is serving a sentence for being in possession of narcotic, told the court that while he regrets the incident, he could not deny the ownership of the bag.
