Berbice Regional Chairman calls for women issues to be placed on front burner

DOMESTIC violence is high on the agenda amongst several other threatening issues which affect women across the globe, and this scourge was recognized by Regional Chairman of Region Six, Mr. David Armogan, during the recent celebration of International Women’s day at the Berbice Regional Health Authority’s compound. Reflecting, the former educator noted that in  Africa, for instance, women suffer from genital mutilation;  in China a child is aborted if the fetus is a girl; in  Arabia, girls cannot mingle  with the boys, and the fairer sex have no freedom.
He noted too that India, described as the largest democratic state in the world, has encountered several problems affecting women.
The Region Six chairman, speaking to the gathering that included medical personnel, and several invited guests, noted that issues earlier highlighted are just a tip on the iceberg of the many evils, which the females encounter around the world.
“The texture of culture in any country depends on how its women are treated,” he added.
“Domestic violence against women is increasing and much needs to be done to protect women. The Region Six Administration, like many organizations, has been speaking out on violence against women. However, the big issues will not be addressed if there is not world peace,” Armogan posited.
He argued that women issues are always placed on the back burner when there are National Issues to be discussed. Therefore, if there are women’s issues to be discussed there must be world peace.
He said, too, that there must be world peace so that women issues can stay in the limelight.
This year, International Woman’s Day was observed under the theme ‘Empower rural women in hunger and poverty.’
The international observation was triggered in the eighteen century, when garment workers in the United Kingdom  started and led the struggle which led to a day being set aside each year to observe women’s rights and the achievements they have made over the years.
During the programme in Berbice, several women who had contributed significantly to society were issued with tokens of appreciation.
