NSC 2011 National Sports Award Ceremony to be held tonight

… President Ramotar to give feature address
THE Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport will host its annual National Sports Commission (NSC) Sports Award Presentation Ceremony tonight at the National Cultural Centre from 19:00hrs with Devendra Bishoo and Dawn McCammon-Barker being the feature awardees of the evening.
Bishoo, West Indian cricketer, was adjudged as the 2011 Sportsman-of-the-Year while National power-lifter Dawn McCammon-Barker copped the 2011 Sportswoman-of-the-Year title.
However, Bishoo will not be present as he is doing duty with the West Indies team in the first ODI against Australia in St Vincent.
Barker’s fellow power-lifter Randolph Morgan is the runner-up Sportsman-of-the-Year while table tennis ace, Trenace Lowe is the runner-up Sportswoman-of-the-Year.
Ten-year-old Badminton star Priyanna Ramdhani was named Junior Sportswoman-of-the-Year while amateur boxer Imran Khan and table tennis’ Nigel Bryan will share the title of Junior Sportsman-of-the-Year.
Long distance athlete Jevina Straker is the runner-up Junior Sportswoman-of-the-Year; The Senior Men’s Golden Jaguars claimed the Team-of-the-Year title; cycling’s Hassan Mohamed is the Sports Coach-of-the-Year and Cheryl Thompson, also in cycling, is the Female Sports Official-of-the-Year.
In other awards, the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) is the Sports Association-of-the-Year and the Guyana Chess Federation is the Most Improved Association-of-the-Year.
Delroy Sookram and Walter Grant-Stuart were named Best Sports Persons with Disability and runner-up respectively.
Winning the Sport Journalist-of-the-Year (Print) was Kaieteur News’ Edison Jefford while the Non-print Sports Journalist-of-the-Year is Guyana Times’ Avenash Ramzan. Stabroek News’ Orlando Charles was adjudged Sports Photographer-of-the-Year.
At the ceremony tonight, the feature address is expected to be delivered by President Donald Ramotar with remarks also coming from Minister of Sport Dr Frank Anthony and Director of Sport Neil Kumar.
