REPEATED offender, Raymond Mangru, was fined $20,000 or an alternative of 20 days imprisonment after he was found guilty of stealing a duck valued $4,000, by Magistrate Adela Nagamootoo. Mangru, who had previously pleaded guilty to stealing two ewes valued $40,000, but later denied the allegation, was found guilty on the count of larceny of poultry at the New Amsterdam Court.
Police Corporal Roberto Figueira, prosecuting, said that on August 8 last, Somalie Causeway, had placed her domesticated bird in a pen at Adelphi Village, East Canje, when she was awakened by the sounds of her barking dogs.
On looking through her bedroom window, she saw the thief with the bird under his arms, as he was attempting to jump over the fence. She raised an alarm, but Mangru escaped. He was subsequently captured and charged.
Mangru was previously convicted for stealing a pig, and other feathered animals.
