I CONSCIOUSLY regretted sitting in the audience with my family at a Phagwah Extravaganza held in Bartica at the Stelling square. Being a family of Indian decent despite being Christian, my daughters of mature age just love Indian music and dances. Since it related to the Hindu festival of Phagwah, I consider it to be wholesome. The introduction of the show was excellent with a dance reflecting on one of the Hindu aspects of God, but as the items unfolded they became lawless.
(1) The granny fit dance demonstrated, brought out vulgarity to its fullest, was not appropriate and was not well appreciated.
(2) The MC story about ‘hole tight’ was out of place, knowing that the audience was made up of both children/parents.
(3) The giggling by the female dancers of the holi/Phagwah songs show the immaturity of their knowledge and intelligence for the songs which were inappropriately played. I must point out, however, that the songs by the Trinidadian singer ‘Ravi B’ were excellent.
Promoters need to estimate the audience and be aware of the lawlessness that shows of this magnitude would encourage. The show was linked to the festival of Phagwah. I wonder how the Hindus who were there viewed it. As a Christian family, we were very embarrassed.
In really bad taste
