Uncontrolled minibus slams GPL’s transformer

…causing widespread power outage
…power restored within hours

AN uncontrolled minibus crashed into a transformer structure of the Guyana Power and Light Incorporated at Main and New Market Streets, Georgetown, yesterday at about 08:19 hrs, causing widespread power outage in several city wards.
GPL disclosed that extensive damage was done to the network, including two transformers, causing a system shutdown; but the company was able to repower the first set of customers at approximately 09:20 hrs, while other customers were repowered at 11:02 hrs yesterday.
GPL said the incident has reinforced the need for parties to exercise extreme caution when using the roadways. Moreover, the power company added, prompt reporting of all accidents involving GPL’s network would assist in speedy resolution of problems caused by such accidents.
GPL expressed gratitude to all customers for their patience, as the company continues to work assiduously to improve its services.
