(In Barbados compliments of Universal DVD, Kares Engineering and Giftland OfficeMax) GUYANA’S skipper Shivnarine Chanderpaul stroked his way to his 61st first class ton (125*) against Christopher Jordan’s maiden five wicket haul for Barbados, to place his team in control at the end of the third day of their West Indies Cricket Board Regional 4day match at the Kensington Oval yesterday.
Scores to date: Barbados 317 and 5 for 1, Guyana 441.The 37 year old Chanderpaul who faced 232 balls and struck 13 fours while batting for 322 minutes, added a record breaking 115 with Brandon Bess (33) for the last wicket as Guyana who resumed the day on 187 for 3 with Narsingh Deonarine on 63 and Ramnaresh Sarwan 19, were bowled out for 441, and faced with a deficit of 124 , Barbados reached 5 for 1 at the close of play.
This was after Jordan snared 5 for 77 while Jonathan Carter and Pedro Collins got two wickets each for 46 and 55 runs respectively for Barbados, who saw Kraigg Brathwaite 3*and Miguel Cummins 0* surviving four tense overs from Guyana at the close of play.
Barbados lost Omar Phillips who was caught low down by Leon Johnson at forward short leg off Deonarine for 2 and still needed a further 119 runs to make Guyana bat again on a wicket that is offering lots of turn to the spinners.
After facing a maiden first over from Sulieman Benn earlier in the day, Sarwan pulled short deliveries from Miguel Cummins to backward square leg for four while Deonarine struck Benn gloriously through extra cover for four to raise the 200 in the 66th over, before ending the over in style with a six over wide midwicket.
Sarwan later struck Benn for a four and six to reach his 63rd first class half century, facing 86 deliveries while batting for 85 minutes, in which he struck seven fours and one six, as Guyana moved to 242 for 3 with Deonarine on 84.
Finally and after receiving five lives the previous day, Deonarine was caught by Miguel Cummins at midwicket off the lively Jonathan Carter for 84 scored off 163 deliveries and 231 minutes of batting with 11 fours and one six, bringing his fourth wicket partnership with Sarwan, which yielded 90 runs for Guyana to an end.
Guyana reached 247 for 4 at the end of the first hour with Sarwan on 55 and Chanderpaul 2, scoring 60 runs from the 17 overs bowled by the home team during that period for the loss of Deonarine’s wicket.
The home team took the new ball half an hour before the luncheon period in the 88th over and a double strike from Jordan one over later, accounted for Sarwan who was caught by Williams at second slip and Barnwell (00), left Guyana on 262 for 6.
Sarwan faced 140 deliveries and batted for 146 minutes; hitting seven fours and one six in his 58 and at lunch, Guyana were 269 for 6 with Chanderpaul on 18 and Darwin Christian 01.
After lunch, Barbados removed Christian, who got a thick outside edge to Jordan at second slip off Collins for 3, before Chanderpaul and Veerasammy Permaul took Guyana closer to first innings points, before Jordan knocked back Permaul’s middle stump for 06 at 307 for 8.
Guyana got first innings points when Chanderpaul, who watched Beaton turn Jordan through midwicket for four in the previous over, struck Cummins through the covers for his sixth boundary, before Jordan bowled Ronsford Beaton for 7 to take his maiden five wicket haul.
Chanderpaul became the fourth Guyanese to record a half century in the innings with an audacious extra cover drive off Cummins, having faced 114 deliveries from which he struck seven fours while batting for 168 minutes.
Chanderpaul and Bess, who struck Ryan Hinds for a four and six in his first over of the day, pushed Guyana to 388 for 9 and a healthy lead of 71 runs at tea, with Chanderpaul on 81 and Bess who offered valuable support with the bat, on 28 his highest first class score to date.
Benn grassed a low chance to his left while stationed at first slip from Bess who was on 28, off the luckless Cummins with Guyana 396 for 9 in the 131st over, following which Chanderpaul chalked up his 61st first class ton from 194 balls and 279 minutes of batting with 11 fours.
The 24 year old Bess’ long vigil with Chanderpaul which saw them surpass Cyril Browne and Berkeley Gaskin’s 1938 record of 86 scored against Trinidad and Tobago at Georgetown Cricket Club ground, came to an end when he was adjudged lbw to Benn.
He faced 112 balls while batting for 115 minutes where he struck five fours and one six, but most importantly for Guyana was the runs he added with Chanderpaul, which placed them in a comfortable position heading into the final day today.
