15th Cheddi Jagan Memorial cycle race on this Sunday

THE roadways in the Ancient County of Berbice from New Amsterdam to Number 55 Village on the Corentyne will be active this Sunday, when local cyclists compete in the 15th annual Cheddi Jagan Memorial road race. The 55-mile event which will be organised by National coach and 2011 Coach-of-the-Year, Hassan Mohamed, will pedal off from Freedom House in New Amsterdam at 09:00hrs, proceed to Number 55 Village on the Corentyne before returning to Port Mourant for the finish.
The Veteran, Upright and Female riders will turn back at Hogstye on the upward journey and return to Port Mourant for the finish in the race which will be contested in several categories. The first six finishers in the senior division will be rewarded, while eight prime prizes will also be at stake.
The first three juniors, veterans and uprights, along with the first two females, first Over-60 participant and the oldest competitor will receive prizes.
Veteran rider Junior Niles is the defending champion in the Senior category, having won last year’s race in a time of 2h.8:39s, while the other winners were Raynauth Jeffrey (Junior), Ian Jackson (Veteran), Dexter Wilson (Upright), Monty Parris (Over-60), Walter Isaacs (Oldest participant), and Naomi Singh (Female).
Transportation for cyclists and officials will leave the National Sports Commission office at 91 Middle Street at 05:00hrs on Sunday. The race is being sponsored by BK International.
