Roach, Best wreck CCC to see Barbados to 189-run win

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) – Kemar Roach and Tino Best wrecked the Combined Campuses & Colleges’ batting, again, bowling Barbados to a sensational 189-run victory in the Regional 4-Day Tournament on Sunday. The fast bowling duo of Roach and Best shared seven wickets, as CCC, chasing 331 for victory, were bowled out for 141 in their second about an hour after the scheduled close on the third day of the fourth round match.
Roach strengthened his claim for a place in the West Indies side for the upcoming series against Australia, capturing four wickets for 35 runs from 12 overs, finishing with match figures of eight for 84 to claim the Man-of-the-Match award.
The 28-year-old Best, supremely fit and bowling with fire, continued to press his claims for a recall, grabbing three for 32 from 11 overs, ending the match with seven for 65.
Sulieman Benn formalised the result, when Jason Dawes swung at his well-flighted delivery, failed to connect, and was bowled for 16.
The result handed Barbados 12 points for their second win of the tournament, which carries them to 24; CCC ended with no points, remaining on 12.
Roach and Best exploited a Kensington Oval pitch that still offered generous bounce and movement, and Nkrumah Bonner was the only batsman to pass 20. He hit a typically classy 49 that included eight fours from 74 balls in just over 2 ¼ hours.
Left-handed opener Omar Phillips, the former CCC captain, stroked 87 to lead the Barbadians to a strategic declaration on 238 for four in their second innings about 40 minutes before tea.
Barbados captain Kirk Edwards, the West Indies batsman, supported with 49, while veteran left-hander Ryan Hinds and fellow spin bowling all-rounder Kenroy Williams were both not out on 33. Kevin McClean and Dawes collected two wickets apiece and were the most successful CCC bowlers.
Best again gave Barbados early success, when CCC started their chase. He had opener Yannick Ottley caught at third slip for one in the third over.
Christopher Jordan, playing in only his second match for the home team, had CCC captain Romel Currency caught at second slip for 10, leaving the substantive visitors 19 for two.
Best swung the match decisively however, claiming two wickets from successive deliveries that sank CCC to 32 for four. He removed left-hander Raymon Reifer for a duck to a loose drive and Kyle Corbin the same score fending a lifting delivery, giving stand-in ’keeper Jonathan Carter two of his four catches in the innings.
Barbados met token resistance when Floyd Reifer and Chadwick Walton joined Bonner to usher CCC over the 100-run threshold.
Once Roach had Reifer and Walton both caught behind for seven and 15 respectively, leaving CCC 103 for six, it was only a matter of time and Barbados claimed the available additional half-hour to be able to secure a day off.
Earlier, Phillips anchored Barbados with resolute batting mixed with enterprise, after the hosts started the day on 103 for one. He batted for 259 minutes, faced 167 balls and struck 11 fours.
Phillips added 134 for the second wicket in an overnight stand with Edwards before they were both dismissed lbw to off-spinner Ryan Austin and Dawes respectively, leaving Barbados 164 for three.
After Carter was dubiously caught behind off Dawes for 17, Williams joined Hinds and they added 55 – unbroken – for the fifth wicket to more or less put the match out of reach of the CCC.
The tournament takes a break next weekend before resuming on March 9, when Barbados host Guyana at the same venue and CCC enjoy a bye week.
