THIRTY young and promising fast bowlers, drawn from clubs across the county of Berbice, attended a bowling clinic, organised by the Special Events Committee of the Berbice Cricket Board (BCB) last Sunday at the Area ‘H’ ground in Rose Hall Town. The clinic, the second to be held in 2012 after a successful one for wicketkeepers as part of the Board’s effort to develop new talents for the county, saw the BCB cater for 24 players, but was delighted with the number that turned up.
The clinic was conducted by coaches Julian Moore, Winston Smith and Michael Hyles Franco and the young charges were coached in the different aspects of fast bowling, including run up, follow through, grip of the ball, delivery stride and body movement.
They were also taught the importance of physical fitness and how a fast bowler must condition his body for the hard work associated with fast bowling. The coaches also discussed several bowling tips with the young fast bowlers re bowling on pitches which are slow and more suitable to spin bowlers.
The three coaches expressed surprise and delight at the talents displayed at the clinic and urged the youths to work hard on their game with the advice and coaching they received.
Chairman of the Special Events Committee Hilbert Foster, who spearheads the BCB Board coaching campaign, stated with the wicket-keeping and fast-bowling clinic successfully completed, the next three to be organised would be for junior spinners, batsmen and captains.
At the conclusion of the clinic, the coaches and junior selection committee would select players for special coaching throughout 2012 under the junior elite training programme.
