POLICE are investigating the death of a Brazilian miner, following an accident at Port Kaituma, North West District. The police said, about 10:00 hrs on Sunday, February 19, Joaodo Deus Silva, 46, of Port Kaituma, was driving an all terrain vehicle (ATV) along the roadway at Jonestown, also in Port Kaituma, when he lost control and it overturned several times.
He and the pillion rider, Winston Bernard, 22, suffered injuries and were taken to Port Kaituma Hospital, where Deus Silva was pronounced dead on arrival while Winston Bernard was treated and sent away.
Meanwhile, in another fatal accident, that occurred at about 21:00 hrs, on Sunday, too, Quadeer Arakhan, 25, of Springlands, was the victim at Crabwood Creek, Corentyne, too.
Police investigations revealed that Arakhan was driving motor car PKK 1056, allegedly at a fast rate, when it became uncontrollable and crashed into a concrete bridge and a parked lorry.
As a result, Arakhan and the other occupant, Avinash Persaud, 18, of Springlands, were injured. Taken to Skeldon Hospital, Corentyne, Arakhan was declared dead on arrival and Persaud referred to the New Amsterdam Hospital, also in Berbice, where he remains in a serious condition.
