Six men, two women held for Monday robberies

EIGHT suspects are in police custody following armed robberies at Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara on Monday. Two students were robbed of jewels, a laptop computer, cell phones and a bicycle, police said.
Police said their investigations led to the arrest of six men and two women and the seizure of an unlicensed .38 revolver with two matching rounds.
Three of the men have been identified as being involved in the robberies, police said.
One incident occurred about 04:30 hrs Monday when students Vivian Rookhum, 31, and her brother, Frederick Cheong, 30, were at their Ninth Field, Cummings Lodge, home.
They were held up by two men, armed with a handgun and a cutlass, who entered the building through an open door.
In the other robbery, about 04:50 hrs, businessman Mohamed Khan, 42, was in his motor lorry outside his Seventh Field, Cummings Lodge house when he was confronted by three men, two of whom had a handgun and a cutlass.
They relieved him of a bag containing US$16,440 and G$255,000 and fled the scene.
But police responded quickly to the reports and diligent investigations resulted in the search of a house at Fourth Field, Cummings Lodge, where the revolver and bullets were found and six men and two women held.
Two of the men have been fingered as the duo who robbed Khan and one other as having committed the robbery on Rookhum and Cheong.
