AT about 05:00 hrs last Monday, Mobarak Alli, 63, of Lot 46 Austin Street, Campbellville, Georgetown, was on his way to the Kitty Masjid for habitual prayers when, to his naked horror, two fearsome pit bulls which live a few houses away from his home attacked him. The enraged animals had just mauled other dogs in the neighbourhood; and, having tasted blood, were irrepressibly agitated.
Their vicious fangs tore through his flesh as he used his hands in attempting to ward them off. His agonising screams brought to his rescue neighbours who managed to chase those monstrous canines away by throwing a bucket of water on them.
The severely disfigured Alli was transported to the Georgetown Public Hospital, where he underwent emergency corrective surgery for the injuries he received.
The man’s wife, Khairoon Alli, yesterday said that the severity of his injuries render him unable to use his hands for work. His left hand is badly disfigured, but there is very limited use in his right hand.
She has been made to understand that the owners of the dogs were out partying, and that activity continued even after they had returned home. Thus the dogs, neglected, exited the owners’ premises via the open gate of the heavily secured premises.
Mrs. Alli noted that prior to the attack on her husband, she never knew that her neighbours had pit bulls, but after her husband had been attacked, she learnt that the dogs had killed two common breed dogs from the street in a fight, and had had the time of their lives feasting on several fowls belonging to neighbours.
The self-employed Mobarak Alli was walking on the road when he was attacked and mauled by the dogs; and his wife said that, had he not screamed, he would have died. Because he screamed, she and several neighbours were alerted to his plight, and responded to his cries for help.
She was loud in praise for the neighbours who assisted her husband, braving the dogs and successfully managing to chase them off the hapless Ali, who was thrown to the ground and was at the mercy of the dogs.
Mrs. Alli said that, so far, the owner of the dogs has promised to take care of everything; but, up to yesterday, she was wondering exactly what they were going to take care of, since they did not specify.
She said that when she last saw her husband, he was in tremendous pain in the Men’s Ward of the GPHC, and was heavily bandaged, having lost a lot of blood.
Mrs. Alli said she reported the incident to the GPHC Police Outpost and also at Kitty Police Station, and ranks there later visited the scene on Monday.
They took the owner of the dogs in custody pending investigations, but he was released on station bail.
The woman said she is hopeful her husband gets better in time, but the injuries he suffered have lifelong effects, since she is certain he would not be able to use his hands as in former times. She is asking that justice be served for her loved one, since the father of two will no longer be able to work.
