ROSEAU, Dominica (CMC) – Windward Islands captain Darren Sammy has lauded the efforts of batsmen Johnson Charles and Devon Smith, after they engineered a comfortable five-wicket win over Guyana in the Regional Four-Day Championship on Monday. Charles hit 66 and Devon Smith weighed in with 43, featuring in a crucial 105-run stand for the second wicket as the Windwards, starting Monday’s final day on 12 without loss, easily reached their target of 181.
Andre Fletcher also stroked an unbeaten 41 to see the Windwards home.
“I believe in the batting of the Windward Islands team,” said Sammy, who missed the first round loss to Jamaica in Kingston last week.
“I think Johnson Charles and Devon Smith batted very responsibly for us and especially Fletcher in the end and they ensured that we got the 12 points.”
The victory for the Windwards was especially important after poor batting sent them crashing to an 81-run defeat to the Jamaicans at Sabina Park.
Sammy pointed out that had the Windwards’ fielding been better, the manner of the victory could have been even more convincing.
“Of course it was a comfortable victory though we lost some wickets in the end but I think that we played very well,” the West Indies captain contended.
“We put down a couple catches and if we had held these catches I am of the view that the game would have finished much earlier. Nonetheless, I am very happy about the way we went about chasing the runs.”
