TWO local amateur boxing referee/judges left Guyana on Friday to officiate in the Trinidad and Tobago Amateur Boxing Association National Championships. Keith Campbell and Dexter Patterson arrived in Trinidad on Friday night and went straight into competition. President of the Guyana Amateur Boxing Association (GABA) Steve Ninvalle said that TTABA sent out a request on Thursday and that GABA was happy to assist.
“It is heartening to know that Trinidad has recognised the competence of our referees and judges hence their request. We plan to build on this,” Ninvalle said.
The Trinidad nationals started on Thursday and will conclude this evening. Patterson and Campbell are expected back home tomorrow.
According to Ninvalle, the exposure and knowledge gained by Patterson and Campbell will be an important ingredient in the advancement of amateur boxing in Guyana.
He added that GABA has planned another seminar for local referees to be conducted by Trinidadian AIBA-certified James Beckles. The seminar will be held here next month and will run for five days.
Beckles conducted a similar exercise in Guyana in January 2011.
