KINGSTON, Jamaica CMC – Jamaican sprint megastar Usain Bolt will open his 2012 season at the Camperdown Classic today at the National Stadium, having made such an announcement on his website, but he did not indicate in which event he would run. Bolt is the World 100 and 200 metres record holder, but reports have swirled in recent months that he may add the 400 to his portfolio.
Keeping this in mind, it would not be strange to see the lanky Bolt line up for the quarter mile to help give his legs some conditioning.
The reigning Olympic 100 and 200 champion, who is also the World 200 champion, could face Botswana sprint star Isaac Makwala if he decides to contest the 400 at the Classic, at which he will be competing for the first time in two years.
World 100 champion Yohan Blake, whose emergence has thrown up mouth-watering prospects for this year’s Olympics in London, also seemed set to open his season at the meet.
Over the past three years, Bolt and other members of the Racers Track Club, which also includes World-rated 400 specialist Jermaine Gonzales, Olympic 400 metres finalist Rosemarie Whyte, Olympic 100 metres finalist Daniel Bailey and emerging sprint darling Schillonie Calvert, have used the meet to kick off their season.
