Fined $10,000 for unlawful possession of ice-pick

ALBERT Mc Donald (no address given) appeared before Magistrate Hazel Octive-Hamilton on Wednesday, facing a charge of unlawful possession of an offensive weapon. He pleaded guilty to the offence, particulars of which said, on February 5, in Lamaha Park Squatting Area, Georgetown, he had a sharp edged instrument without lawful authority or reasonable excuse.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said ranks were on mobile patrol when they saw the defendant on a bridge and a search of his person yielded an ice-pick for which he could give no reasonable explanation.
Mc Donald told the court he was carrying the weapon for personal protection but he was sorry and would not do so again.
He was fined $10,000 with the alternative of two weeks imprisonment.
