I WISH to refer to your newspaper article under the caption, ‘UG councillors speak out – set the records straight on rescinding Kissoon’s contract’ in the February 1, 2012 issue of the Guyana Chronicle. Kindly permit me to state the following:
(1) I have profound respect for the UG councillors who spoke out on the termination or rescinding of Frederick Kissoon’s UG contract, and do not believe that the council’s action was ‘politically motivated’ but more so professional and acting in the best interest of the University of Guyana in observance of UG’s Act and other statutes.
(2) The UG council was unanimous in their decision to terminate Kissoon’s contract because he failed to meet the University’s policy as regards the retention of academic staff. If Kissoon had fulfilled UG’s policy on the retention of academic staff I am certain that his contract would not have been terminated by the council.
(3) It was wrong and totally unacceptable for UG’s Vice Chancellor to renew the contracts of academic staff including Kissoon’s without recourse to the appointments committee and the council. This action by the Vice Chancellor is blatant disrespect for the council and the appointments committee. He needs to apologise to these bodies before he departs UG.
(4) The UG administrative staff acted unprofessionally and compromisingly, since they failed miserably to inform the general public on the reason for Kissoon’s contract termination.
(5) The UGSS was part of the decision-making for Kissoon’s contract termination; yet this students body is actively involved in protest demonstrations on UG campus in ‘solidarity’ with Kissoon’s contract termination issue. The UGSS is therefore not a credible body and UG students must demand quickly the changing of its current office bearers to restore dignity and credibility to their students’ society.
(6) I am appealing to the UG council to stand firm by upholding UG’s Act and its statutes so as to protect our highest educational institution from corrupt practices and to restore professionalism in all its departments.
Call for restoration of professionalism at UG in all departments
