Former President still has roles to play

I wish to refer to the Guyana Chronicle article under the caption ‘Former President Bharrat Jagdeo receives Honorary Doctorate from Teri University’ in its issue of Saturday February 4, 2012. Kindly permit me to state the following in your letters column.
(1) On my return to Georgetown from Santa Rosa Amerindian village, Moruca sub-region, Region One last Saturday (February 4, 2012) I was greeted with the great and inspiring news.

(2) Congratulations to former President of Guyana Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo for once again making the people of Guyana a proud nation on receiving the Honorary Doctorate of Philosophy from India’s Teri University. This is indeed a glorious achievement.

(3) Guyana’s former President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo now holds three Honorary Doctorates including a Prestigious champion of the Earth award from the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) for exemplary world leadership in Environmental Protection and the fight against Global Climate Change and its catastrophic consequences.

(4) During his presidency, former President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo demonstrated his determination in the fight against global climate change when he launched Guyana’s Low Carbon Development Strategy (LCDS) with the support of the people of Guyana in June 2009. This meant that Guyana with over 80 per cent of its forest intact will pursue avoided deforestation for payments to be used for clean development, thereby reducing carbon emissions which will help to control global climate change.

(5) Guyana’s former President Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo won international admiration for Guyana’s LCDS and in November 2009 a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) was signed between Guyana and Norway in support of Guyana’s LCDS up to 2015. These payments have already started.

(6) Dr. Bharrat Jagdeo is no longer Guyana’s Head of State, but it is my wish that President Donald Ramotar could continuously use his expertise to further promote Guyana’s LCDS beyond 2015, both nationally and internationally. The former president has a vital role to play in Guyana’s ongoing development process.
