Bishoo, Barker cop NSC Sportsman and Sportswoman Awards for 2011

GUYANA and West Indies leg-spinner Devendra Bishoo and national female powerlifter Dawn Barker copped the National Sports Commission’s (NSC) 2011 Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year awards yesterday.
The panel, headed by Chairman of the NSC Conrad Plummer, and comprising representatives from the media fraternity and the Ministry of Culture Youth and Sport, voted Priyanna Ramdhani winner of the Junior Sportswoman award, while Nigel Bryan and Imran Khan were jointly named Junior Sportsman-of-the-Year.
Central and America Games record holder Randolph Morgan claimed the runner-up position to Bishoo while local table tennis queen Trenace Lowe edged Caribbean squash queen Nicolette Fernandes for the runner-up position in the female category.
Jevina Straker, one of Guyana’s middle distance queens, took the runner-up Junior Sportswoman award, while Delroy Sookram, a gold medallist at last year’s Special Paralympics held in Athens Greece, took home the Person with Disability award.
In what was described as an interesting nomination process by Director of Sport Neil Kumar, the panel made interesting proposals for future nominations and the selection process was a transparent one.
Stabroek News’ Orlando Charles retained the Sports Journalist Photographer Award, Avenash Ramzan (Sports Journalist Non-print), Edison Jefford (Sports Journalist Print) and the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) (Sports Association).
The Guyana Chess Federation was named the Most Improved Association, Guyana Cycling Federation’s president Cheryl Thompson (Female Sports Official) while acting president of the Guyana Football Federation Franklyn Wilson and president of the GTTA Henry Greene were given Honorary Mention in the Male Sports Official category.
National Cycling Coach Hassan Mohamed took home the Male Sports Coach award and Guyana’s national football team the Golden Jaguars, the Sports Team Award.
The presentation of the respective awards will be done at a later date.
