CHIEF Executive Officer (CEO) of Guyana Telephone & Telegraph Company (GT&T), Mr. Yog Mahadeo has appealed to the public to help eliminate a current spate of vandalism against its cables and other equipment. He said every month, for the past year, at least twice, GT&T’s infrastructure is being damaged by vandals who target and cut conduits and cause disruption of its service.
Mahadeo said, as a result of those acts, GT&T’s entire technical team has been caught up in a vicious cycle of repairing the damage countrywide, to the extent that the routine programme of installations, repairs and maintenance has been pushed back by several months.
He said the 2011 schedule, for example, was delayed by eight months because of the need to deploy the personnel to deal with destruction by vandals.
“This is something that has been severely hampering us in our expansion programme,” Mahadeo disclosed.
He challenged members of the public to partner with GT&T, by being vigilant with respect to its infrastructure in their environs and make reports of any suspicious activity near such facilities.
Mahadeo said: “We are trying hard to improve our services. We certainly hope that the public can partner with us and report when they see people who are up to no good; when they see people near the phone lines and up on the posts and so on. We need to stop this nonsense.”
