… in aid of Thomas United Football Club 52nd Anniversary
ALLIANCE for Change (AFC) Member of Parliament Mrs Cathy Hughes on Thursday afternoon at a simple handing-over ceremony presented the lien trophy to president of Thomas United Football Club, Oliver Hinckson, at the Hotel Ariantze Side Walk Café and Jazz Club. The presentation was done in aid of the club’s 52nd Anniversary and the Mashramani Challenge Cup which is run in collaboration with the Winners Connection Football Club of Linden.
The tournament will kick off on February 5 and run until March 11, 2012 and would see clubs from the affiliated associations of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) battling for prize money totalling over G$1.1M.
The tournament will be played at the Mackenzie Sports Club ground in Linden, Uitvlugt Community Centre, Georgetown Football Club and Beterverwagting Community Centre on the East Coast of Demerara..
President of Thomas United Football Club, Oliver Hinckson, stated, “We believe that tradition must be maintained and in this regard Mrs Cathy Hughes has come forward to present the lien trophy – all in aid of the development of youth and sport.”
He noted that the trophy is an indication of the tradition that exists within Thomas United Football Club, the second oldest football club after the Georgetown Football Club, for 52 years.
Asked if the GFF has given its blessings on this tournament, Hinckson said, “They were written to and have replied stating the requirement that needs to be fulfilled by the host club Winners Connection Football Club.”
Presenting the trophy Hughes said she was delighted to be a part of this tournament and celebrations of the Thomas United Football Club.
She lamented that her colleague, the late Mrs Sheila Holder, had always sought in her private moments ways to promote extra curriculum activities for the youths in Guyana and would be pleased at her contribution to this venture at this moment. Matches would be played in communities across Guyana where the youths would benefit.
