Muslim scholar re-arrested, on $150,000 bail

THE Muslim scholar accused of sexually assaulting several young boys under his guidance was on Tuesday re-arrested after he was placed on $150,000 station bail last week Thursday. Commander of “C” division (East Coast Demerara), David Ramnarine, in an interview with this publication via telephone, confirmed that the man had been re-arrested, and the investigations process continues.
Following concerns by some section of society about the slow investigation process, Ramnarine had announced that no time will be wasted in serving justice, however, works must be conducted in accordance with the Sexual Offences Act.
He explained that there are new procedures under the act and it takes time for things to be dealt with appropriately.
Ramnarine had told this newspaper that even while persons are concerned that the investigation is being conducted at a slow pace, the Guyana Police Force, along with the other authorities, are working to ensure that justice is served.
The commander reported that a total of nine boys, four of whom are brothers, had been molested, as confirmed by medical reports and statements taken from the children.
Ramnarine said persons are still coming forward with new accusations  and it will be some time before the accused is taken to court and charged.
This unfortunate situation came to light last week when the parent of three of the children allegedly assaulted, received information from the Child Protection Agency.
According to reports, the issue came to light after several anonymous calls were made to the Child Protection Agency informing them of the abuse.
The mother reported that she was first made aware of the incident when a Welfare Officer turned up at her home Monday night with her three children.
The families of the victims are calling on the authorities to ensure that the perpetrator is dealt with appropriately and said they will not be accepting any sort of bribe to let the case rest, since that would be condoning the abuse.
