– meets President Ramotar, Opposition leader
PROFESSOR Norman Girvan, the Personal Representative of the United Nations Secretary General paid a courtesy visit to Guyana on Monday through yesterday.
Monday he met with his Excellency Donald Ramotar, at the office of the President.
A Ministry of Foreign Affairs statement said Professor Girvan also met with the Leader of the Opposition David Granger and Chairman of the Alliance for Change Khemraj Ramjattan at Parliament Buildings yesterday.
The United Nations Secretary General performs the role of Good Officer in the controversy between the Republic of Guyana and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela. He is assisted in that role by Professor Girvan.
The role of the Good Officer is to assist both states in search of a solution to the controversy that arose from the Venezuelan contention that the Arbitral Award of 1899, which established the boundary line between the two states, is null and void.
The release stated that Guyana and Venezuela have committed to the resolution of the controversy in a peaceful manner, and have reaffirmed their support for the “Good Offices” process of the United Nations Secretary General.
