Expired goods seized from Essequibo businesses destroyed
THE Public Health Department of the regional administration in Region 2 (Pomeroon/Supenaam), seized a quantity of expired food items from several supermarkets and wholesale and retail shops in the commercial centre of Anna Regina yesterday morning. Senior Environmental Health Officer, Ms. Shaleena Jaigobin, said the confiscated merchandise included mixed nuts, chocolate cookies, ‘Kraft’ macaroni and cheese, ‘Sunshine’ products, bottled seasoning, fruit juices, ‘Dentyne’ ice, cereals and hot sauces.
The goods were all destroyed and burnt at the Lima Dumpsite, also on the Essequibo Coast.
She said the exercise was part of the normal campaign by the Public Health Department to check the shelves of businesses for expired items.
According to Jaigobin, the estimated value of what was taken away is about $150,000 and the seizure was in accordance with the Food and Drug Act Chapter 34:03, which states that it is against the law for a business to keep or sell expired items inclusive of groceries.
She advised all consumers to check expiry dates of items before making purchases.
