A young woman on her way home on the night of November 12, 2006 was taken to the Triumph burial ground, East Coast, Demerara, where she was raped and robbed. The woman was able to identify her attacker, and promptly reported the matter to the police, resulting in Steve Providence being arrested and charged with rape and robbery.        
This criminal matter began yesterday before Justice Dawn Gregory and a mixed jury at the Demerara Assizes, where the accused, Providence, is conducting his own defence.
The prosecution is being conducted by Miss Konyo Sandiford, in association with Miss Diana Kaulesar from the Chambers of the DPP.
