Third annual GT&T softball 10/10 competition launched
GUYANA Telephone and Telegraph (GT&T) company’s 10/10 Softball Competition officially entered its third year with the launching ceremony at the new GT&T BlackBerry Office, Brickdam, yesterday.
Present at the ceremony were CEO of the company Yog Mahadeo, Chief Finance Officer Royston Rachpaul, president of the Guyana Softball League (GSL) which is the organiser, Halim Khan and representatives of the numerous co-sponsors.According to Mahadeo, this year’s competition promises to be bigger and better than the previous years with much more prizes to be won, more teams intent to participate and of course more support from spectators and partners.
He said “It is amazing when you breathe life into something and give it enough thought, push and support how it can energise an entire country.”
“The tournament is a collaborative effort with GSL and Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport that have been very supportive in previous competitions and events outside of the GT&T 10/10 and because of this we are very happy to have them on board and hope the partnership continues,” Mahadeo said.
He continued: “Ran under the theme ‘It’s our Game”, the aim of the tournament was achieved which was to ban together communities across the country and have fun and we have taken the game to areas as far as Skeldon and Port Mourant. We have revived cricket in the villages and streets; that was our main aim – to keep culture alive.”
GSL’s president said that his organisation was pleased to once again be associated with GT&T for the tournament. He reflected that the company made a commitment during the first year to make the competition an annual affair and has kept its word.
Khan said there were 584 teams in the inaugural year then the number escalated to 1 224 which proves how greatly the tournament has grown.
Making brief remarks were representatives of co-sponsors Banks DIH, the Guyana Lottery Company, King’s Jewellery World and Gizmos and Gadgets who were all in the same boat and happy to be on board with GT&T.
Meanwhile, the tournament takes another turn as a USA and Canadian team will compete against Guyana, in the international leg.
GT&T is also planning to give back to the 10/10 fans with millions of dollars in prizes and credit to be won in games which can be played with a GT&T Handset.
