After five years…

Runaway convict remanded on new robbery charge
TWENTY-THREE-YEAR-OLD Tommy Benn, after being on the run for almost five years, was remanded to prison when he made an appearance before Magistrate Fabio Azore on Monday, at Whim Court, Corentyne, Berbice.
Police Corporal, Roberto Figueria, prosecuting, said Benn had been jailed in absentia on conviction for a drug offence.
However, he is now charged with having, in company with others, robbed Davi Naidoo of Cdn$600 and G$140,000 and a gold ring.
The prosecutor said the woman was at her home at Belvedere Corentyne when Benn and the others committed the robbery.
Benn was previously convicted of being in possession of a narcotic for the purpose of trafficking in January 2007 but, after securing bail, he never returned for trial and was sentenced, on February 17, 2009.
The prosecutor successfully objected to pre-trial liberty for Benn, on the grounds that a gun was used to rob the victim and the accused is currently serving a three-year sentence for having trafficked narcotic.
