SHERWIN Trotman, of Lot 45 Section ‘D’ South Turkeyen, East Coast Demerara, was remanded to prison yesterday, on charges ranging from abduction, robbery under arms, unlawful wounding and illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition. Before Acting Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry, he was charged indictably with abducting Ashanti Payne on January 9 and, the same day, being armed with a gun, robbed Margaret Griffith of gold jewellery worth $70,000.
Trotman pleaded not guilty to the summary charges, which alleged that, on January 9, too, he unlawfully and maliciously wounded Edward Griffith and had a .32 Taurus pistol and five matching rounds, without being the holder of licences for them.
Police Sergeant Lionel Harvey, prosecuting, said ranks had gone to Trotman’s home to conduct a search in relation to a robbery under arms report and the gun and bullets were found there.
The Prosecutor said the victim in the abduction case is the reputed wife of the accused and Margaret and Edward Griffith are her siblings.
The prosecution’s narrative said a masked man entered the home of the Griffiths and robbed Margaret of jewels, wounded Edward and bound Payne, whom he took away in a waiting car, then put her in a taxi and sent her home.
The prosecutor said the other virtual complainants identified the car as belonging to the accused and Payne fingered him when she was released.
But Trotman claimed that the allegations were made against him because he had a misunderstanding with Payne.
However, the prosecutor successfully objected to bail for Trotman, on the ground that he is a repeat offender.
The firearm and ammunition cases were transferred to the Sparendaam court, also on the East Coast of Demerara, for January 16 and the others will be called in the city, again, on January 20.
