British University appoints Dr. Prem Misir as Professor in Public Health

THE Professorial and Readership Committee of the University of Central Lancashire in England has appointed Pro-chancellor of the University of Guyana, Dr. Prem Misir, as Professor in Public Health. In addition to his research and publications, the Committee recognises and supports Misir’s continuing engagement with the University of Central Lancashire, and the Head of the School and Misir will soon determine the modus operandi to enhance this engagement.
Professor Misir is the holder of the Ph.D. (University of Hull), MPH (University of Manchester), M.Phil (University of Surrey), B.S.Sc. (Honours) (Queen’s University of Belfast), with post-doctoral work in Public Health at Columbia University.
Misir is the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Guyana, a position he has held since 2003. In addition to eight peer-reviewed books and several journal articles in AIDS Patient Care and STDs, Journal of International and Comparative Education, Social and Economic Studies, etc., he has two public health books due to be published this year – HIV/AIDS Knowledge and attitudes among high school students in the Caribbean; and a systematic review of the impact of HIV/AIDS-related stigma reduction interventions on voluntary counselling and testing uptake.
Misir’s current study is on HIV/AIDs-related stigma in the Caribbean;  Collaborative Researcher with the University of Bern, Switzerland on Rethinking the Millennium Development Goals:  Stakeholders’ Perceptions & Strategic Choices, where these MDGs include public health goals.
He was Clinical Associate Professor, New York University College of Dentistry Behavioral Sciences; was part of PAHO/WHO EvaluationTeam: for Renewing Primary Health Care; and PAHO/WHO ConsultativeTeam: CARICOM priorities for the Proposed Regional Goals for HumanResources for Health; and a Member of the Global Fund/Country Coordinating Mechanism (GF/CCM) for HIV/AIDS, Tuberculosis, and Malaria.
Misir was Associate Public Health Epidemiologist, New York City Department of Healh and Mental Hygiene, Bureau of HIV/AIDS Prevention & Control; and Assistant Professor and Primary Care Coordinator in Medical Education, Interfaith Medical Centre/State University of New York Health
sciences Centre Brooklyn; Research & Evaluation Coordinator – Graduate Medical Education, United Hospitals Medical Centre/University
of Medicine & Dentistry of New Jersey.
Professor Misir also did some significant work in Graduate Medical Education with PGY1, PGY 2, and PGY 3 Medical Residents at the Interfaith Medical Centre/State University of New York Health Sciences Center Brooklyn.
He was Visiting Professor, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine – “Graduate Research Methods”, University of the West Indies, St. Augustine; and was Visiting Professor, Anton de Kom University of Suriname – “Evaluation of Health Promotion and Education Programmes,” Anton de Kom University of Suriname.
Professor Misir currently is a Faculty for Research Methodology and Biostatistics in the Faculty of Health Sciences, University of Guyana.
