–exchange gunfire with police
POLICE are hunting four armed men who, on Monday night, entered the Fung-Fook Supermarket at Vryheid Village, West Canje, Berbice, held the proprietor Deryck Fung-Fook, 53, and three others hostage, and escaped with a large sum of cash and jewellery. Police report that, at around 21:15 hrs, the four armed men entered the supermarket and forced the proprietor, his daughter and cashier Erika Fung-Fook, 21, and Leonard Bhagwandin, 46, of Vryheid Village to lie on the ground.
After the men had left with their booty, the police were alerted and responded promptly, pursuing the men until they ended up in a swampy area, where gunfire was exchanged. The men, however, escaped, and no arrest has yet been made.
Savage Street incident
Police are also investigating an armed robbery that occurred at about 21:05hrs on Monday night at Savage Street, North Ruimveldt, Georgetown. During that robbery Felix Alleyne, 37, of Paradise, East Coast Demerara was shot and injured.
Investigations revealed that Alleyne was standing on the roadway when a man approached and shot him to his left side. The man then took away his gold chain and escaped.
Alleyne is in a stable condition at the GPHC.
Investigations are continuing.
