–two judges assigned 226 cases
JUSTICE Dawn Gregory and Justice Franklyn Holder are expected to tackle a list of 226 cases at the January criminal assizes, which opens today and will last until March 31st, 2012. This list includes 67 cases for murder, 23 for manslaughter, 70 for carnal knowledge, and 31 for rape offences, plus other cases such as dangerous driving, wounding with intent, and narcotics.
Litigants and concerned lawyers, affected by the long list and inadequate number of judges are hoping that the powers concerned with justice and the appointment of judges will take steps to have the problem resolved.
One litigant declared that justice delayed is justice denied.
In the meantime, the opening of today’s session is marked by the holding of a traditional parade by the Guyana Police Force Band and 60 ranks of the Tactical Services Unit.
One of the two judges to preside at the session will inspect a Guard of Honour to mark the occasion, and will later take the salute during a march-past outside of the court.
Thereafter, the Registrar of the Supreme Court will address jurors of the two panels.
Decision will then be taken as to which cases will be fixed for trial.
