(DEMERARAWAVES): Former national 100 meters athletics champion, Orin Sobers, who was involved in an early Sunday morning accident on Norton Street, succumbed while receiving treatment at the Georgetown Public Hospital (GPH). Sobers, 48 of Lot 24 Norton St, Lodge was a labourer.
A post-mortem examination performed on his body yesterday revealed the cause of death as multiple injuries. Up to late yesterday no one had been arrested in relation to the incident.
According to the man’s reputed wife Kay Pompey, 44, they attended a function at the Public Service Union (PSU) on Saturday night and were on their way home at around 01:00hr when the accident occurred just a stone’s throw away from their destination.
Pompey said that they were heading East along Norton Street (on bicycle) and just as they approached several large potholes on the road, just past Victor Street, they were hit from behind by an unknown vehicle.
The woman related that she was unconscious after the impact and as such she was not aware what transpired afterwards until she arrived at the GPH.
Sobers’ daughter Shawana, 24, said she received a call from her sister Satasha Sobers, 26, informing her about the accident. She stated that when she arrived at the scene she assisted Pompey to the hospital via taxi and her older sister did the same with their father.
At the hospital, Pompey, who received abrasions to her right arm and right knee and to the left side of her forehead, was treated and sent away, while Sobers succumbed around 15:00hrs Sunday.
The latter related that prior to the accident she was wearing a pair of gold earrings and she had her purse. Both items, she said, went missing following the accident, and she feared they were stolen. Sobers leaves to mourn one other child (an 18-year-old son), two grandchildren (ages 2 and 5), and three sisters.
