I AM in total agreement with the Education Minister for calling on school managers and head teachers to visit their various schools prior to their opening following end-of-term holidays. At the moment, when schools are re-opened after end-of-term holidays, school children are called upon to clean the schoolrooms, desks and benches, etc. This is so because most, if not all government schools are without cleaners or janitors. This poses a big problem for the schoolchildren since their clothing are soiled in the process of cleaning. Only recently a number of parents from the Uitvlugt area on the West Coast of Demerara were seen washing and cleaning the school in the village.
This is indeed a good example of cooperation and goes to show that many things at the community level could be corrected as long as there is unity and cooperation among residents. Cleaning the schools is for the benefit of their own children who need to study in a clean environment.
I want to commend those villagers who were engaged in the cleaning-up operation, and wish to urge others from other villages to do likewise so that their children enjoy just the correct atmosphere for studying.
Good idea to visit schools prior to opening
