MURDER accused Mark Singh, who was remanded to prison for the brutal killing of Mrs. Sharanie Doobay, wife of Dr Ramsundar Doobay, Head of Internal Medicine at the Georgetown Public Hospital Corporation (GPHC), succumbed yesterday morning at the GPHC after falling ill last Monday. Home Affairs Minister, Mr. Clement Rohee confirmed on May 31st, 2011 that Singh, who is also the nephew of the deceased, had confessed to the murder of his late aunt, and had led investigators to the death weapon.
According to Director of Prisons, Mr. Dale Erskine, during a telephone interview with this newspaper, the 35-year-old Singh took ill last Monday, and was rushed to the GPHC, where he had been receiving medical attention since he was diagnosed with high blood pressure. “The prisoner is the nephew of Dr. Doobay’s late wife. It was reported that he had died from high blood pressure…He took ill on Monday and was hospitalized…He was receiving treatment, but succumbed and died this morning,” Erskine said.
He clarified that Singh had not been a victim of any bodily harm which might have led to his demise.
On the evening of May 24th, 2011, Mrs. Sharanie Doobay, 58, was found brutally slain in her Echilibar Villas, Campbellville home.
The tragic discovery was made by Dr. Doobay at around 18:00 hrs on that day, after he had returned home, having forgotten his keys in the house.
After calls to his wife went unanswered, the doctor sought the assistance of a male relative, who opened a door after gaining entry to the building through a window.
Mrs. Doobay was reportedly lying in a pool of blood, with her head bludgeoned; and sources at the scene had said that robbery seemed not to have been the motive, since a number of valuable articles were recovered in the home, including cash, jewellery and a licensed firearm.
On May 31st, 2011, during a media conference, Minister Rohee had confirmed that a male relative of Mrs. Sharanie Doobay had confessed to her murder.
Dr. Doobay had also given a statement to the police regarding his whereabouts on the day his 59-year-old wife was found dead in their home. She had suffered injuries to her head and other parts of her body, and strands of hair had been found clasped in her hands.
